With such a large film community, we have all the film equipment you will need for your production.  From the latest generation of ARRI and RED cameras, to the SteadyCam and the latest generation of lighting, everything is available in Quebec.

Films.Solutions has an impressive amount of lighting and grip equipment as well as the technicians to use them.   As far as cameras are concerned, we have Sony cameras, action camera, 360 camera, drone and our suppliers are the same as for large international productions, so they can provide all the bigger cameras and prime lenses available.  The equipment is in sufficient quantity to ensure that you don’t lose time in case of equipment failure.  Montreal is one of Canada’s major road, rail and airport hubs; we are able to have equipment delivered anywhere in the country in less than 24 hours.

To work in Canada on an advertising shoot

You do not need a work permit if you’re working on a foreign-financed commercial/advertising shoot for television, magazines or other media and you’re:

  • a film producer,
  • an actor,
  • a director,
  • a technician, or
  • other essential personnel.

Note: You must be entering Canada for a short period of time, usually no more than two weeks.

Do I need a visa to visit Canada?

Most travellers need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport.

What you need depends on:

  • the type of travel document you will travel with;
  • the country that issued your travel document;
  • your nationality; and
  • how you will travel to Canada.

If you do not have the proper documents, such as an eTA or visa, you may be delayed or prevented from boarding your flight to Canada.

Foreign operators

If you are a foreign operator (that is, you are not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a corporation incorporated by or under federal or provincial and you want to fly in Canadian airspace), you must have an approved SFOC to fly a drone for any purpose (recreational, work or research).

You must already be allowed to use the drone for the same purpose in your home country. Include your country’s approval or authorization with your application for the SFOC (Special Flight Operating Certificate).

What exactly is a fixer?

The term “fixer” originated in journalism. Correspondents in an unfamiliar location would hire a fixer to help with various aspects of their assignment, such as logistics, translation, planning, transportation and accommodation.

Today, a fixer offers support at every stage of a production, whether in the news, film or television industry. At FILMS.SOLUTIONS, a fixer is someone involved in the materialization of a film or Television project. Would you like to know more?

Do you offer sound post-production services?

Yes, we are able to offer audio post-production services. Whether you wish to do a complete post-production or just a few voice-overs, we are able to prepare a sound post-production session with one of our sound engineers.

Where can you make sound recordings?

Sound recordings can be made in all locations where there is air, but not all locations are suitable for good sound recording. We cannot always control the sound environment, but rest assured, our sound recordists will notify the director and/or production team in the event of a problem.

If you use our location scouting services, we recommend that you bring a sound recordist along with your DOP, director, etc., during technical visits, as only he or she can anticipate possible sound issues.

If you wish to continue the recording, despite having been warned by our sound recordists about possible technical issues, you are 100% responsible for the final result.

Our packages are generally based on the type of production, we have, of course, an essential minimum; our recording technicians are professionals and will not accept to make a poor-quality recording. Packages are per day, week, month, or by production.

Our sound engineers / recordists are generally musicians or music and sound enthusiasts. Each of our sound technicians has a training in sound recording and continues to receive regular technical training, as well as training for the sound department.

A good sound recording is as essential as a good image recording.  Of course, all the sound can be redone in post-production, and our sound engineers are able to do this. If your budget allows it, we will be happy to redo your entire project in post-production.

Our rates respect the conventions of the various technician associations. Rates are based on a predetermined number of hours, as well as on the equipment used. We generally work full days or half days, but under conditions. We would be happy to provide you with a quote for your project.

In our basic sets, we have:

  • Digital multitrack recorder
  • Two wireless microphones
  • Boompole and a shotgun microphone
  • Weather protectors and wind attenuators suitable for filming

Afterwards, depending on the type of production, we have various essential equipment to ensure the best possible quality sound recording. We will not cut into equipment and/or use lower-quality equipment, in order to reduce the price.

I’m the producer of a reality show with 10 participants, are you able to do the sound recording?

For a quick answer, YES. This type of production requires the presence of two or more sound recordists. We are accustomed to managing several frequencies and making sure that no outside interference hinders the production. The management of the various transmitter/receiver frequencies of the participants’ wireless microphones is handled by our senior sound recordist. Data management is handled by our digital data manager, which is part of our camera department.

All audio and video capture equipment are fully synchronized with each other and checked several times a day to ensure that post-production can proceed in an optimal manner.

Air travel into Whitehorse, Yukon available connecting through most major Canadian cities.  Air North and Air Canada offer flights to Whitehorse. Our production team can take care of your trips to Whitehorse, we mainly use Air North, the official airline of the Yukon.

Supplemental crew & equipment can be flown in from Ottawa or Toronto, 4-5 hour flight.

  • a news reporter or member of a reporter’s crew,
  • a member of a film or media crew who will not enter the Canadian labour market,
  • a journalist who works for a print, broadcast or Internet news service (journal, newspaper, magazine, television show, etc.) and your company is not Canadian,
  • a resident correspondent, or
  • a manager and or member of clerical staff, as long as the event is short term (six months or less).

If this describes you, you do not need a work permit.

To work in Canada as a performing artist

You do not need a work permit if:

  • you’re a foreign artist or the artist’s key support staff (people vital to the performance),
  • you will perform in Canada for a limited period of time,
  • you’re not being hired for ongoing employment by the Canadian group that has contracted you, and
  • you’re not involved in making a movie, television or radio broadcast.

Examples include:

  • a foreign-based band or theatre group and their key crew,
  • street performers (buskers),
  • disc jockeys,
  • members of a foreign or travelling circus,
  • guest artists working within a Canadian performance group for a limited time,
  • World Wrestling Entertainment wrestlers (and members of similar groups),
  • people who will perform at a private event, such as a wedding,
  • air show performers,
  • rodeo contestants,
  • artists attending or working at a showcase,
  • film producers (business visitors),
  • film and recording studio users (limited to small groups renting studios who will not enter the labour market, and to business visitors) and
  • people doing guest spots on Canadian television and radio broadcasts (guest speakers), such as news programs.

The simple answer is yes but with Films.Solutions you are protected with our own insurance.  Films.Solutions is fully insured and we make sure that all production we are involved in, respect safety rules to protect the crew and the equipment.
